Practitoners, Mentors and Tribes are rated from Basic Practioner/Mentor through 5 Star Practitioner/Tribe and 3 Star Mentor depending on the courses the individual member has completed. Horse Boy cannot gurantee a Practitioners, Tribes, or Mentors services but all people listed here have fulfilled all requirements for their level including but not limited to video submission of work with children and horses, case studies and testimonials.

Basic Practitioners/Tribes/Mentors are only qualified to offer "One-Family-Sessions", 2 Star and higher Mentors and Practitioners can work with more than one family at a time and offer Horse Boy Pladyates. Independent over night Horse Boy Camps can ony be run by 4 Star or higher Practitioners.

Our centre is called Paso a Paso, (Step by Step) it is an outdoor centre, located in Bariloche, Argnentina. We work in a big field, with trail rides, and also in an arena and round pen. We have a team Brain Gym instructor, physiotherapist, psicomotricist, psychologist , and also a team of volunteers. Three wonderful horses, Crespo, Chalten and Mago.

As well as special physical needs, STEP BY STEP focuses on psychological, emotional and sensory needs, as well as personal development and growth.

WHO ARE WE

We are inter-disciplinary team of people working to address the special needs of each disabled person as a unique individual. The team includes:
• Carolina Lockwood, Coordinator, Special needs Brain Gym® Instructor, Touch for Health facilitator and art therapist
• Veronica Verger: trained psychomotor therapist
• Gabriela Francescut Kinesiology
• Guillermina Lamarche Hearing impaired and deaf specialist

We also have a team of voluntary assistants, as well as horses who are also specially trained for the activity.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To provide this activity and make it available to people with special needs, in particular to those who are socially- economically disadvantaged?

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

- Stimulate physical ability and coordination
- Familiarise people with the tridimensional movement of the horse
- Harmonise both inter and intra –personal relationships
- Increase confidence and self-esteem
- Enhance communication skills
- Broaden cognitive understanding and self-organising skills
- Achieve re-education through movement, using Cellular memory techniques such as Brain Gym ® and Touch for health
- Stimulate all the senses (tactile, kinaesthetic, auditive, visual and rhythmical)

CONCEPT

Through experience we’ve come to confide implicitly in the interior healing power of the individual person. This becomes available whenever conditions are suitable for establishing an effective connection between mind, body and spirit. In STEP BY STEP, the diverse elements of nature are key to achieving this, resulting in changes that are more profound than is common in the clinical environment of conventional therapies

. We do our work in a holistic and experiential way, and the changes produced take place internally on all three levels of the person. As they are subtle, at first they are difficult to detect, but with time they blossom into new behaviours capable of transforming the person’s everyday life completely.

Each being is unique and special, with different abilities and ways of learning.
STEP BY STEP meets each person on their particular level, offering experiences carefully designed to stimulate learning according to their own rhythms and ways of being.

BASIC PHILOSOPHY

As a complementary rehabilitation process for people with special needs, equine therapy seeks to work holistically to improve their quality of life and inclusion in society. Its advantages have been recognised since the times of ancient Greece. In 458 BC, writing in The Diets, Hippocrates recommended horseback riding to re-establish health and protect the body from a diversity of ailments.

THE PROCESS

From the communication that develops between person and horse there grows a deeper connection of familiarity and affection. The codes that are established between the two, not needing words go far beyond the intellect. The pupil assumes a position of ‘leader’ in order to establish and handle the areas of the activity. The horse, as well as needing the link that leadership establishes, also needs the contribution of the person – so playing a role in valuing and reaffirming the person’s self-esteem, and coordinating naturally the internal question-answer process that is unfolding.

Activities in the saddle take advantage of the three-dimensional movements of the horse to stimulate the pupil’s muscles and skeletal articulations. The horse’s upward, downward back and sideways movements are all similar to the movements of a person walking. Contact with the animal also brings therapeutic benefits at levels of cognition, emotions, communication as well as in forming personality.
Riding a walking horse provides a sensory introduction through movement that is variable, rhythmical and repetitive. The reply that this movement stimulates in the rider as a result is similar to the human being’s pelvic movements when walking. Variations in the horse’s walking rhythm make it possible to calibrate the therapy in terms of the intensity of the sensations being received. Pupils respond enthusiastically to such a fun learning experience that takes place in a natural environment so different from the therapy consulting rooms to which they have become accustomed.
In physical terms, horseback riding can aid those of limited capacity, of all ages, with both balance and mobility, while at the same time helping them with communication skills and behaviour in general.

WHERE TO FIND US
STEP´BY STEP works outdoors on a property 11 km East of Bariloche - Patagonia, Argentina- on Bustillo Avenue. We have a large corral of 20 x 40 mts, a round pen of 14 mts diameter, a mounting platform, and an extensive area of attractive wetland where we carry out our excursions in constant interaction with Nature.
The horses live outdoors with the best care and attention. As well as their therapeutic work, they get plenty of exercise, training and excursions. In winter they return to the country and their natural habitat and wilder state, a crucial factor in maintaining the balance of their emotional and psychological well-being.

BENEFICIARIES
Our beneficiaries are people with differing kinds and degrees of limitation:
Motor – sensory - mental –intellectual (Down syndrome) – personality disorders (Such as psychosis, autism, attention deficit, among others) Cerebral palsy – people at risk

Some pupils are covered by social security provision that recognises the activity, while others pay fees or are subsidised. Bariloche has a large population of disabled people, many of them in deprived, low-income neighbourhoods. STEP BY STEP wishes to make itself available to all of them.

OVERALL THERAPEUTIC OBJECTIVES

• Sensory stimulation (tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, and others)
• Relaxation of the pelvic muscles
• Mobility in pelvic and vertebral articulations
• Regularization of muscle tone
• Strengthening musculature in the trunk area
• Increasing body symmetry
• Increasing awareness and regularity of physical walking patterns
• SpecIfic neuromuscular work (trunk and head posture and muscle tone, fine and coarse motricity, incorporating intentionality into action, reactions of balance, straightening up and support, releasing weight on hands and feet, dissociation of pelvis and scapular bands, passive, active or limb-assisted mobility, articular trunk, neck and limb mobility, use of reins and application of other aids to horse handling and riding
• Improved balance and coordination
• Develop and reinforce corporal and lateral patterns and notions of time and space
• Exercise different aspects of cognition and language
• Positively influence emotional and social aspects: self-image, self-esteem and confidence, improve relationships and communication with others
• Improve stability and posture of trunk and head
• Offer an activity that is different, fun and stimulating
• Create a space different from that of everyday routine in order to optimise the collaboration of educational professionals and therapists

SAFETY IS FUNDAMENTAL

Each rider is accompanied at each side by one or two people, according to ability, in addition to a third who leads the horse.
We have an insurance policy for civil responsibility, as well as individual insurance for each participant. In all cases permission is requested from parents or guardians for the activity. It is also mandatory to have permission from the professionals in charge of each case,

WORK METHOD
We normally work one hour weekly sessions with each participant, or group sessions integrating play dates, contact with other animals, other activities.
• The professionals in charge of therapy, as well as reception and logistics, are assisted by one or more volunteers.
• Sessions are generally individual, except in those cases where the ability of pupils is sufficiently advanced to permit a group session.
• We begin with exercises of contact with the horse, grooming, identifying parts of the horse and relating them to one’s own body, followed by work in the round pen. Then, according to individual ability, comes therapeutic mounting and riding. In all cases we try to give the pupil as much activity as possible, in order to gain independence by resolving the emerging challenges of the process.
• The round pen, the place where the horse receives its training, is where students learn to communicate with the animal.
• Much more than mounting and riding, the work is about learning the animal’s language. Since this work penetrates deeper than everyday normality, it enables the pupil to cross important barriers – such as those in communication and other skills, self-esteem and leadership, to mention a few. By feeling supported and empowered, the person develops abilities he or she has so far not suspected.
• We record specific skill development on a chart at the beginning of the process and at the end of every month. This enables us to focus clearly on changes, progress or difficulties and so analyse the strategies needed to continue. By consulting with our team of therapists as a unit, we design a work plan that is consistent with the other activities and therapies the pupil is receiving as well as the horse therapy.
• STEP BY STEP works combining advanced techniques - Brain Gym®, Touch for Health, exercises in coordination, cognition, balance and language – to produce a learning process that is genuinely holistic.
• We take every person into account as a unique individual. We stimulate their integration, ability to choose, make decisions and develop as a person. We enhance their personal growth and self-confidence as first steps towards the greater changes that will come as their learning process unfolds.
